Reporting Cyber Fraud in India: The National Portal, the 1930 Helpline and What Follows
Online fraud often moves money through several accounts within hours. The reporting systems set up by the Ministry of Home Affairs are built around that speed. Knowing which channel to use, and what to keep ready, makes a difference.
General information, not legal advice.
The two main channels
- Helpline 1930. The national cyber fraud helpline is meant for financial frauds that have just happened. Calling quickly gives the system a chance to flag the transaction with banks and payment platforms.
- cybercrime.gov.in. The National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal accepts complaints about financial fraud and other cyber crimes, including online harassment and crimes involving women and children. A complaint registered on the portal is routed to the police in the relevant state.
The two channels are linked to the Citizen Financial Cyber Fraud Reporting and Management System, which lets banks and payment intermediaries act on reported transactions.
Information to keep ready
Before calling or filing, collect:
- date and time of each transaction;
- transaction IDs, UTR numbers or reference numbers;
- your bank account or card details used, and the beneficiary details shown;
- screenshots of messages, calls, links, websites or app pages used by the fraudster;
- phone numbers, email IDs and social media profiles involved.
Do not delete chats or call logs, even if they are upsetting.
Steps with your bank
Inform your bank through its official helpline or branch at once and ask it to block the card, UPI or net-banking access involved. The Reserve Bank of India's circular on customer protection in unauthorised electronic transactions links a customer's liability to how quickly the fraud is reported, so a prompt report to the bank matters as well as the police complaint.
FIR and further steps
A portal complaint is not automatically an FIR. Depending on the case, police may register an FIR, and cyber crime police stations handle many matters. Under the BNSS, information about a cognizable offence can also be given electronically, with signature on the record within the time the law allows. Keep the complaint acknowledgement number for all later correspondence.
Avoid "recovery" scams
After a fraud, victims are often contacted by people claiming they can get the money back for a fee. Official agencies do not charge for registering complaints. Treat such offers with caution.
Kolkata
In Kolkata, cyber crime complaints can be pursued with Kolkata Police's cyber police station as well as through the national portal; check the police website for current contact details.
